BioElectric Meridian THerapy (BMT)- What a Session Looks (& Feels) Like.
I recently had a Bioelectric Meridian Therapy (BMT) session with Doris. My muscles were feeling tight and sore in my back and legs after starting a new gym program and Doris suggested I try BMT for some relief. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my session, but I left the treatment feeling lighter, looser, relaxed and my muscle pain was completely gone!
What is BMT?
The Academy of Bioelectric Meridian Massage Australia (ABMMA) describes BMT as a technique that has roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine and uses the body’s natural bio-electricity to improve functional movement and wellbeing by unlocking the meridian pathways. This allows for the smooth flow of Qi and blood and helps to balance of yin and yang to bring the body into homeostasis.
The ABMMA notes that BMT can be used to support the following conditions, stress, anxiety, insomnia, headaches and migraines, soft tissue injuries, digestive issues, immunity and many women’s health issues including hormone imbalance, fertility, post party recovery, mastitis, endometriosis and pelvic floor issues to name a few.
How does BMT work?
BMT works by delivering a gentle microcurrent into the body to stimulate the meridians this is done via a bioelectric device called the ABMMA PRO and a special alkaline BMT cream. The ABMMA PRO is is TGA approved. Doris doesn’t just use the ABMMA PRO and step away, she is part of the circuit. She stands on a mat and using her hands directly on your body, she conducts the current herself. With her hands she massages your body allowing her to create an intuitive and responsive treatment. BMT is not suitable for people with electrical implants like pacemakers.
THe consultation
After a brief consultation, I started lying face down on the treatment bed, Doris placed a conduction pad onto each of my thighs. Using her special cream which was cold but non greasy she started to massage my upper back focusing on my trapezius and rhomboid muscles. Once I was comfortable with her touch Doris informed me she was going to start the BMT.
She stood on a special mat and I could feel a light zinging sensation on my back. This sensation changed and became a bit stronger as Doris moved her massage to my lower back. On my legs it felt like the muscles were slightly vibrating. Doris focused on the Bladder meridian, which runs down the whole back and legs, exactly where I’d been feeling my post exercise muscle tension.
At no point was the experience unpleasant or painful. If you have had acupuncture I can tell you the sensation was like the electricity or zing you feel when a needle stimulates your Qi at the acu point. I was relaxed enough to feel like I could have fallen asleep.
My Thoughts
The treatment helped relieve the post workout tightness in my body and, unexpectedly, even shifted some chest congestion I’d been carrying from post-nasal drip. I hadn’t realised how much that lingering heaviness was affecting me until it cleared.
I feel like BMT had the grounding of acupuncture with the soothing hands on feeling that gentle massage brings. It felt like best of both modalities bought together in one.
Doris is intuitive and skilled. I felt supported throughout the whole treatment. If you’re feeling tight, sluggish or just need something to reset your system, BMT is definitely worth trying. Doris has completed extensive training in BMT including, Level 1 and Level 2, upper and lower extremity and Level 2, gut and brain health with the Academy of Bioelectric Meridian Massage Australia. Doris is one of only 5 NSW qualified practitioners of BMT.
Like acupuncture BMT works best over a number of sessions as it has a cumulative effect on the body. Doris will guide you on how many treatments may be required for your individual needs. I have booked in again for a second treatment in a fortnight.
